Jacksonville, the most populated city in the state and the largest by area in the contiguous United States as of 2020, is a metropolis on the Atlantic coast in northeastern Florida. When the local government merged with Duval County in 1968, this location served as their seat. With consolidation, the majority of its metropolitan population was contained inside the city borders, significantly increasing its population in comparison to its expanded area. With 971,319 residents as of July 2022, Jacksonville is the most populated city in the Southeastern region of the United States and the largest in the South outside of Texas. The Jacksonville metropolitan area is the fourth-largest metropolitan region in Florida, home to 1,733,937 people. Clay County, St. Johns County, Nassau County, and Baker County make up the metropolitan area.

Located around 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of the Georgia state line (25 miles or 40 km to the urban core/downtown) and 350 miles (560 km) north of Miami, Jacksonville is a city that spans the St. Johns River in the First Coast region of northeastern Florida. The villages of Jacksonville Beaches are situated on the nearby Atlantic coast. The Timucua people were the first people to live in the area, and in 1564 the French established Fort Caroline, one of the first European settlements in what is now the continental United States. A town known to the Seminole as Wacca Pilatka and to the British as Cow Ford sprang up at the narrow place in the river where animals crossed during the British colonial era. The town was named for Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and the seventh President of the United States, and was founded in 1822, one year after the United States annexed Florida from Spain.

Since the late 19th century, deep-water harbor upgrades have elevated Jacksonville to a major military and commercial port. Because of its riverine location, it is easily accessible to the Port of Jacksonville, Florida’s largest seaport by volume, the U.S. Marine Corps Blount Island Command, Naval Station Mayport, and Naval Air Station Jacksonville. The third-largest military presence in the country is comprised of Jacksonville’s military installations plus the adjacent Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. The local economy is heavily influenced by banking, insurance, healthcare, and logistics industries, among other sectors. The Jacksonville region, like a large portion of Florida, depends heavily on tourism, especially in the golf industry because the PGA Tour headquarters are close by at Ponte Vedra Beach. Some refer to residents of Jacksonville as “Jacksonvillians” or “Jaxsons” (occasionally spelled “Jaxons”).
