The name “St. Lucie” comes from a town that was established on December 13, 1566—the feast day of Saint Lucia—near Jupiter Inlet. Due to a series of typos, the name eventually became connected with the modern-day community of St. Lucie Village, Florida, which is located to the north of modern-day Port St. Lucie. After “La Florida” and “St. Augustine,” it is the third-oldest European place name currently in use in the United States. Along the St. Lucie River, in the early 1890s, many families established a pioneer village called Spruce Bluff, complete with a school, post office, pineapple plantation, and sawmill. The former town site is now a protected area known as the Spruce Bluff Preserve. The preserve features a hiking area, canoe access, observation spots, and an ancient Ais Indian mound in its southern portion in addition to a cemetery near the old settlement.

In the 1950s, the territory that would later become Port St. Lucie was a mainly empty piece of property south of White City, consisted of a fishing camp (Burt Pruitt’s Fishin’ Farm) along the St. Lucie River, a few farms and businesses near U.S. 1. The General Development Corporation (GDC) spent $5 in 1958 to buy the River Park subdivision and 160 square kilometers of land along the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. The GDC’s first bridge across the St. Lucie River was opened to the public in 1959, facilitating easy vehicular access to Port St. Lucie.
