A Prayer for a Compass in the Direction of Glory
Humble me today Holy Spirit. Your word reveals abundant and special blessings are reserved for those who seek no self-glory.
Hide me in the closet of prayer. Keep my left hand ignorant of what my right is doing. Mute the horn of pride from its obnoxious report. Grant rests from my wearisome and tedious ego. As a finger points to the sun, let my life point only to you.
Without hesitation Joseph shunned and fled the flattering lips of Potiphar’s wife, anticipating the seductive consequences of the siren’s song. Ulysses bound himself to the ship’s mast. Captain of my soul, bind me to the directed glory of the cross.
Thank you, Father, for the gift of speech. Like no other gift it reflects who I am. Whose I am. However, my tongue is the most frequent tool used to steal your glory. It is the slave of my deceitful heart. A heart which wakes up every morning with one purpose, to attract praise, attention and importance to myself. To take all that is Yours and try to make it mine. To appropriate glory from the creator to the created.
O wicked man that I am! Save me Lord Jesus. Save me from lies, and half-truths, exaggerations, misstatements, tales where I am always the hero. seducing and lustful language, self-centered negotiation, any leadership or discipleship, ministry of any kind which would usurp devotion to me and not to You.
Vanquish, Master, any cravings for the mention of my name, respectful glances, titles and honors, acknowledgement of feats, trophies of victory and monuments that feed the illusion of immortality to some lasting legacy of any existence outside of you.
I prostrate myself before you, Holy God the only one worthy of glory. Let every breath today every thought spoken be in awe and fear of you. Fill me with wonder at your goodness, patience and mercy. Control my tongue today so that each word is backed by a testimony of your wisdom and revelation. And let the compass of my life be set only in the direction of Your Glory.
