Meeting Our Father in the Inner Sanctuary

To enter into God’s dance of exuberant joy and fullness of life we must descend. This descent is a descent into the deepest reaches of our consciousness and our unconscious. It is really an ascent to God who dwells in the secret recesses of our hearts. It is simply growing into greater, expanded consciousness through prayer. To pray to the Father in the inner sanctuary of our heart, with the clearest, purest consciousness of his abiding love, and our sincere desire to surrender totally to him by a reformed life of love towards others, we must get rid of any dispersion of inner attention. Love does not grow when we are scattered about in our thoughts, but rather when we are deeply focused and concentrated on the one we love.

Inward Stillness

Quieting our hearts and thoughts may be one of the most difficult tasks we face in hearing the voice of God and discerning the leadings of the Spirit. In Psalm 46, the psalmist begins by encouraging us that God is our refuge and an ever-present help in times of trouble. He then goes on to list all of the confusion and commotion that disquiets our hearts and troubles our minds. We can all relate! There is a blessed invitation in the midst of the storm: Come and see what the Lord has done. He hasn’t abandoned you in the storm, rather He’s working in the midst of it. Finally, he calls: Be still and know that I am God! Lord help us find this quiet, still place; help us to sense you in the midst of life’s storms, meeting you in the inner sanctuary and living responsively. –DH
