The Eyes of Faith

We shouldn’t put down people who show great euphoria and excitement after a born again or religious experience. They’re right. Suddenly the world makes sense for them. Suddenly it’s okay, despite the absurdity, the injustice, the pain. Life is now so spacious that we can even absorb the contradictions.

God is so great, so bottomless, so empty, that God can absorb even the contraries, even the collision of opposites. Thus salvation often feels like a kind of universal amnesty, a total forgiveness of ourselves and all other things.

Everything Belongs

The eyes of faith open to a heavenly perspective, an unfolding narrative, a spiritual reality that human eyes don’t see. Eyes of faith offer an eternal perspective on all things, reframing our perspective of things that are temporal. Offering purpose and meaning to our existence by clarifying that “God Himself appointed the times and habitations of our lives” (Acts 17:26), and assuring us of His will in our lives: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jer. 29:11). Let us pray for eyes of faith; eyes that see things as our Father sees them; eyes that are open to the work of the Holy Spirit, in our own lives and those around us; and eyes that convey the compassion, grace, humility, and love of our Savior. —DH
