The Gift of Friendship
Friendship is one of the greatest gifts a human being can receive. It is a bond beyond common goals, common interests, or common histories. It is a bond stronger than sexual union can create, deeper than a shared fate can solidify, and it can be even more intimate than the bonds of marriage or community.
Friendship is being with the other in joy and sorrow, even when we cannot increase the joy or decrease the sorrow. It is a unity of souls that gives nobility and sincerity to love. Friendship makes all of life shine brightly. Blessed are those who lay down their lives for their friends.

Bread for the Journey
Nouwen begins, “Friendship is one of the greatest gifts a human being can receive.” Because it’s one of the greatest gifts to receive, it’s also among the greatest gifts we can give others. Friendship is a two-way street. For believers, friendship is crucial as it provides a vital support system for spiritual growth, offers encouragement, accountability, and a safe space in which to share faith experiences. Friendship allows us to live out our beliefs more fully through mutual love and support, mirroring the love of Christ in our relationships with others. A godly friendship acts as a reflection of the community and fellowship that is central to Christian faith. We were not created to navigate life alone. God said, “It is not good for man to be alone” (Gen. 2:18). Who are you sharing life’s road with? Need a friend? Go be one! —DH
