God the Provider

Inside the ark of the covenant in the Most Holy Place in the temple of Israel, there was a pot of manna (see Exodus 16:32). Every time the chief priest came in to meet with God, he stood not only in God’s presence, but also in the presence of the pot of manna that was placed there to remind him that God does provide for his people.

When the Israelites were hungry in the wilderness, they began to grumble against God, wishing they were back in captivity. Moses commanded them to trust God to provide for their needs. In the morning when they awoke, the Israelites discovered white stuff covering the ground.

The word manna, comes from the Hebrew phrase man-hu, which means, “What is it?” All the people of Israel initially wondered what the manna was, and then they realized that it was their food, God’s provision to sustain them.

One of the truths that each person must believe is illustrated by that pot of manna. The God who revealed himself in Jesus Christ is the Creator of the universe. Not only did he create all things, he also sustains all things. Even beyond that, this Creator and Sustainer is also the Provider, the one who sees our every need and takes care of those needs. He is in sovereign control, and we must recognize that he will provide for our needs in every situation, no matter how small or how desperate.

This Day with the Master

When the Israelites wandered in the wilderness, completely dependent on God for their daily sustenance, He miraculously provided manna each morning, ensuring they never went hungry. This divine provision was not just about food; it was a reminder that God sees and meets the needs of His people, no matter how desperate their situation may seem. The preserved manna in the Ark was a tangible sign that God’s provision is not just for a moment but is enduring and sufficient for all time. This same God who provided manna in the wilderness is still faithful today. Whether we face physical, emotional, or spiritual needs, He is our provider, ensuring that we have exactly what is necessary at the right time. Even in situations that seem impossible, God is able to supply our needs in ways we may not expect. Just as the manna never failed during Israel’s journey, His care for us never runs out. When we trust in Him, we can rest assured that He will sustain us, no matter how great or small our needs may be. Remember this as you bow your head and heart today. What looms large on the horizon? What needs have you concerned? With confidence, pray confidently, expecting God’s promised provision. —DH
