A Good Night Prayer
Father, I abandon myself into your hands, do with me what you will. Whatever you may do, I thank you; I am ready for all, I accept all. Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures. I wish no more than this, O Lord. Into your hands I commend my soul; I offer it to you with all the love of my heart, for I love you, Lord, and so need to give myself, to surrender myself into your hands without reserve, and with boundless confidence, for you are my Father.

“I lie down and sleep; I awake for the Lord sustains me” (Psalm 3:5). Psalm 3 was written by King David while running for his life, as his son Absolom sought to kill him. If ever there was a reason for sleepless nights, this was it! And yet, David was able to close his eyes in confidence that the Lord would sustain him. Today’s devotional read is a wonderful nighttime prayer. We need our rest, and this prayer rightly applies, fixing faith at the forefront. In sleep, we are abandoning ourselves into our Lord’s hands, trusting that He has us firmly in His grip. Running the race is tiring. As you make your way through this day expending energy, do so with the expectation that you can rest tonight in the Father’s promise, and rise tomorrow to welcome the new mercies and new graces that are promised. —DH
