The Infinite and the Finite
THOU GREAT I AM, Fill my mind with elevation and grandeur at the thought of a Being with whom one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day,
A mighty God, who, amidst the lapse of worlds, and the revolutions of empires, feels no variableness but is glorious in immortality.
May I rejoice that, while men die, the Lord lives; that, while all creatures are broken reeds,
empty cisterns, fading flowers, withering grass, He is the Rock of Ages, the Fountain of living waters.
—Valley of Vision
In a world of constant change and fleeting comforts, this Puritan prayer reminds us of the majesty and unshakable nature of our God. He is the Great I Am—eternal, unchanging, and glorious beyond all human comprehension. Kingdoms rise and fall, generations pass like shadows, but God remains the same. He is not swept up in the chaos of history or the fragility of our fears. When we lift our eyes to Him, we are lifted out of the smallness of our worries and into the vastness of His power and presence.
This prayer reorients our hearts, calling us to place our trust not in fading flowers or broken cisterns, but in the Rock of Ages, the Fountain of living waters. In Him, we find both majesty and mercy, eternity and intimacy. Let it stir your soul with awe and anchor your heart with confidence. Take this great Puritan prayer and make it your own. —DH
