When Both Worlds Become One

Real spirituality dawns when our life with God becomes as real as the problems and joys we experience each day. Until then we live in two different worlds – one seemingly real, practical, and demanding world; the other a wistful, so-called ‘spiritual’ world. This separation cannot remain if all our life is to be filled with real meaning, peace, and awe, no matter how violent or stormy our days may become. When we are truly prayerful, we join both worlds. As we become naturally aware of God throughout the day, we journey in both worlds simultaneously. That is truly the spiritual life.”

—Robert J. Wicks,
Everyday Simplicity

True spirituality isn’t found in escaping life’s chaos—it’s found in inviting God into the middle of it. Robert J. Wicks reminds us that until our life with God is as real as our daily stress, heartbreak, laughter, and joy, we’ll feel torn between two worlds: one practical and pressing, the other distant and abstract. But prayer is what bridges the divide. It draws heaven down into the grit and grace of ordinary life.

For those reaching out in crisis or confusion today—know this: you don’t need to wait for stillness or perfection to meet with God. He is already present in your mess, your anxiety, your longing. Begin by simply acknowledging Him in the moment you’re in. That’s where real peace begins. That’s when both worlds become one. —DH
