Home Along the Way
Going home is a lifelong journey. There are always parts of ourselves that wander off in dissipation or get stuck in resentment. Before we know it we are lost in lustful fantasies or angry ruminations. Our night dreams and daydreams often remind us of our lostness.
Spiritual disciplines such as praying, fasting, and caring are ways to help us return home. As we walk home we often realize how long the way is. But let us not be discouraged.
Jesus walks with us and speaks to us on the road. When we listen carefully we discover that we are already home while on the way.
—Henry Nouwen,
A Lifelong Journey
The journey home isn’t always marked by distance, but by the quiet return of our hearts. Henry Nouwen reminds us that parts of us are always drifting—into distraction, resentment, or longing—while our truest self longs to return to God. The road can feel slow, the progress uneven, but the spiritual practices of prayer, fasting, and compassion gently guide us back, one step at a time.
And here’s the grace: we’re not walking alone. Jesus is already beside us, speaking on the road, reminding us that home is not just the destination—it’s His presence with us right now. If you feel far off today, don’t despair. Listen closely. You may find that even in your wandering, you’ve already begun to return. —DH
