Nothing to Lose, Everything to Gain
The good news is that the scriptures, tradition, the experience of the saints, and our own experience tell us that it is possible to face the unknown and even to face opposition without fear and without defeat. To expect a life without struggle is unrealistic. But it is realistic to expect God’s help in living an authentic and joyful life as a Christian.
To daily declare our love for God and neighbor, to give ourselves as fully as we can to God, and to ask for God’s help in living an authentic life of faith is to be prepared to meet any and all opposition. Once we have given all of life to God, we have nothing to lose. We have everything because God has us.
—Rueben P. Job,
A Wesleyan Spiritual Reader
Struggle is a given in life—especially for those pursuing healing, wholeness, or a deeper walk with God. But as Rueben P. Job reminds us, Scripture, tradition, and the testimony of countless believers show us that it’s possible to face hardship and even opposition without fear. Life will not always be easy, but it can still be marked by joy, authenticity, and peace when we trust in God’s presence and provision. The good news is not the absence of struggle, but the nearness of God in the midst of it. When we daily offer ourselves to God—our time, our efforts, our brokenness, and our love—we step into a freedom that can’t be shaken. No matter what we face, we know we are not alone. Once our lives are fully surrendered, we no longer have anything to lose, because everything that truly matters is already secure in God’s hands. This is the unshakable foundation of a life of faith: not that we control the outcome, but that God lovingly holds us through it all. —DH
