Don’t Climb or Swim Alone
A wise swimmer does not cross a difficult channel without a boat close behind, with those aboard watching for signs of danger or weariness and providing words of encouragement along the way. Nor does a prudent climber scale a mountain alone, without companions to hold the rope and help along the way.
—Joan Chittister, Listening Hearts

Whether crossing deep waters or climbing steep heights, wisdom says: don’t go alone. Joan Chittister’s image reminds us that life—especially the life of faith—was never meant to be a solo journey. A swimmer needs a boat nearby, watchful eyes, and encouraging voices. A climber needs companions who hold the rope and offer steady hands. In the same way, we need spiritual community—people who see us, support us, and speak truth when we grow weary or afraid.
The journey of healing, growth, or discernment can feel overwhelming. But we don’t have to scale it on our own strength. God places others around us—not just to help us survive, but to help us thrive. Don’t be afraid to lean on the boat beside you or the rope in your hand. That’s not weakness; it’s wisdom. Let others in. Let them hold your story. And trust that in walking together, we move closer to God—and to the summit He’s calling us toward. —DH
